Free (As In Beer) E-Mail Subscription Icons

Although e-mail subscriptions are related to RSS feeds, I didn’t like using the standard RSS icon next to my “Get Updates by E-Mail” link. I had trouble finding an icon that matched the standard RSS icon being offered for free, so I created the icon to the left for my own use.

Recently, I noticed that one of my favorite “how to make money” bloggers (Maki from, was using the standard RSS icon next to his “Get Updates By E-mail” link. Because I take a lot of free information from DoshDosh, I thought I’d offer him the email icon as a small token of my appreciation. He graciously accepted it, and you can see it in action by visiting his site.

If any of you have been looking for a similar icon, I packed eight different sizes of the icon pictured above into a .zip file for you to download and use on your website for free, no strings attached.

Download the free email subscription icon pack here.

If you found this useful, be sure to let me know in the comments.

  1. I think that icon looks great. Did you make it straight from scratch or did you use an RSS icon as the base?

If you did make it from scratch – you really oughta look into doing some freelance type graphic design type stuff. That way you’re not strapped down to a job.

  2. IΒ΄m using your icon now. Like you, I was looking for something different that still kept the same feel of the RSS standard and since IΒ΄m on an extended stay out of the country I donΒ΄t have access to my Adobe CS2. Good thing I found your icon which saved the day.

  3. You are a real star, Jon. I did a quick Google search for “icon email”. Your site came up on the first or second page and was EXACTLY what I was looking for!!

  4. thanks for the icons, I typed email icon RSS and voila! this is what I was looking for, I’m still setting up the links, in few days it will be ready.

  5. hi, thanks a mill for these icons. was desperately trying to find some way of giving users the option of subscribing via RSS or Email without having to waste space duplicating words. unfortunately standard email icons just don’t convey the message. double kudos on putting it out there for free. interesting that you don’t use it on your site, but you can see it in use on our blog at

    thanks again

  6. Fabulous! Thanks for these… I’d been looking everywhere for something like this!
Found this post after the hubby gave me the link to your beard page… nice. πŸ™‚

  7. Would be perfect on my blog but I have no idea how to install this icon into my Feedburner html script. Would really appreciate your help.

  8. 1. Copy the 16×16 version of the icon to your server
    2. Look at your feedburner HTML for this:

    <a href=";loc=en_US">Subscribe by Email</a>

    3. Right before that insert the following making sure to insert the location of your image where it says [location of the image on your server]:

    <a href=";loc=en_US"><img src="[location of the image on your server]" alt="" style="vertical-align:middle;border:0"/></a>&nbsp;
  9. Thanks! I’ve put this on my site now!

Do you have the RSS icon to match? I have an RSS icon and the color is subtly different… I want matching colors of both :/ Where did you get your RSS icon?

  10. Hey Jon, hi all,

I was inspired by your frustration at the poor choice of standard feed icons, and have created a WordPress plugin (my first ever) that you might be interested in. It is called Subscription Options.

It adds three subscription feed icons options for readers to place in any widget-ready area. Users can add a FeedBurner RSS feed URL; a FeedBurner Email service URL and a Twitter feed URL to the relevant images. Icon sizes and title text are totally user-defined.

I used the standard orange RSS icon that you used to create your mail icon, and I’ve remixed your mail icon and turned it green (you get credit in my readme). Finally, I’ve made a totally new Twitter feed icon in blue, which I hope your readers will like.

    Please check it out here:

    All feedback appreciated.

  11. You’re the top hit on Google for “RSS email icon” now… well done! Was just what I needed. The snip of code in the comments was a real time-saver too.

High-five for free beer (and speech)!

  12. When I originally left a comment I appear to have clicked the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and from
now on whenever a comment is afded I recieve four emails
with the same comment. Is there an easy method you can remove
me from that service? Appreciaate it!
