85+ Free Halloween Movies From Netflix On Demand

Last Halloween, I put together a list of 66+ Free Halloween Movies From Netflix On Demand in an effort to get you Netflixers something scary and fun to watch on Halloween. Well, because Netflix rotates their inventory of on-demand movies, most of the movies on that list are no longer available to watch online. Not to fear though, because I put together a fresh list for your viewing pleasure this Halloween.

I tried to make sure that the movies below have at least a three (out of four) star rating, but I’m not going to pretend that I didn’t slip some purely awful B movies and camp classics into the list just for fun.

Need something to watch this Halloween but you don’t have Netflix? I’ve got you covered. Here are 10 public domain classic movies that are available to (legally) download and watch for free. They range from bad to pretty bad, but bad horror movies are part of what Halloween is all about.

Netflix Adds A Thousand Movies AND An API

Netflix delivered up a double whammy on the official Netflix blog that should appeal to geeks and non-geeks alike. Not only did they announce a partnership that provided 2,500 additional movies to the Watch Instantly service, but they have finally released an official Netflix API.

Partnership With Starz Play Shows Some Promise

The new partnership with Starz Play that has allowed Netflix to add 1,000 movies today with another 1,500 promised by year’s end. Sure, that thousand is padded with movies like Desperately Seeking Susan and Air Bud, but it does includes some fairly recent gems like No Country For Old Men, Superbad, The Lookout, Gone Baby Gone, and even the latest Season 3 episodes of Heroes for your instant viewing pleasure.

The partnership also includes a Starz Live TV page where you can watch, well, whatever happens to be on Starz TV right from your browser. Of course, I don’t see a whole lot of benefit of watching a live stream of Starz in a small player embedded in the browser, but it is possible to make the video full screen by simply right clicking on it. Fullcreen Starz + connection to TV = Free subscription to Starz without a higher cable bill

The Netflix API Is Finally Available

For the geeks, Netflix has also announced an official API (which people have been waiting for since the service started), so be looking out for Netflix aware applications to start arriving in the next few weeks. Netflix (Finally) Adds Watch Instantly RSS Feeds

Every two weeks, I’ve been combing through the Netflix service to bring you the latest Netflix Watch Instantly additions and deletions because Netflix wasn’t providing an easy way to get the information. I put in a request for a Watch Instantly RSS feed a year or so ago, but Netflix never implemented it, so I did the best I could at providing the information on my own.

Well, Adrian from Netflix just let me know that Netflix is finally providing RSS feeds to track almost everything you need to know about their Watch Instantly New Additions. They don’t provide information on deletions, but that’s relatively minor. Even though it throws the usefulness of one of my regular posts into question, this is a huge step in the right direction for Netflix users.

Netflix Watch Instantly Additions For August 7

Add titles and alt tags to movies. Check Video Vixens

It looks like Netflix has added around 100 movies to the Watch Instantly service in the last couple of weeks, putting the total number of titles at around 5300 movies. I’m throwing out only eight that I think are worth a watch, but as usual, there are very few recent titles. Sure, Sudden Impact has the famous “Go ahead, make my day” and Magnum Force has that classic 70′s Dirty Harry action, but they’re both 25+ years old.

The Hudsucker Proxy clocks in at about 15 years old, Clay Pigeons at 10, and the only newer movies are independent. It’s a typical complaint about the service: until Netflix can secure more modern, major studio releases, the Watch Instantly service will remain an archive of indie, classic, and cult movies. There’s plenty of good things to watch if you’re a cult or classic movie fan, but I don’t think that they have enough mainstream offerings to get people to justify spending a hundred bucks on a piece of equipment to watch them.

As if disk space were free, Netflix slipped in Under The Cherry Moon (starring Prince), Six Pack (starring Kenny Rogers), and Indecent Proposal (which won Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Supporting Actor from the Razzies). I don’t know a sober person who would sit down and watch any of these 15 years ago, and I don’t know any now. They also slipped Video Vixens, a 1975 Troma sexploitation “comedy”. It was originally rated XXX, but it can’t be considered XXX by today’s standards. The movie is so bad that not even a large amount of full frontal nudity will be enough to keep you interested.

Netflix Watch Instantly Additions For July 24

It looks like Netflix has curtailed their need to add old TV shows this round, but that doesn’t mean they’ve upped their standards any. I counted eleven fishing/boating instructional videos and five teen after-school specials in this round, so if you’re into teens and seamen, this update was made for you.

For the rest of us, it was the usual slew of bad movies and concert videos. Any cool points that I could’ve awarded Netflix for adding Fishbone, Iggy Pop, and Obituary videos were retracted due to the addition of a second Europe concert video. Did we ever need one? Who is asking for Europe concert videos these days? If it’s you, I’m begging you to put down the aqua net, get rid of strip out of your acid washed jeans, and stop requesting that the 80′s come back. I’m looking right at you there, Chi-town.

DOOdaLOOO doooo… Doodaloo doo doo…

To make matters worse, JC In the Hood was added. What? You never heard about the miraculous story of Jebus and the Satan fighting for control of the ‘hood? I tried to resist its power, but I couldn’t help myself. I only made it through fifteen minutes of really bad acting and accidental camera glances, but I’m telling you that there is a good reason why Zombies vs. Satan: Meat for Satan’s Icebox (check the list. It’s there.) got a higher rating with a mere 1.9 stars. I wish that the worst of it, but a Pat Morita Movie called Hammerlock was added despite having no more than a 1 star rating anywhere in the known universe. Shouldn’t any movie that is worse than JC In the Hood be stopped from wasting gigs of disk space and internet bandwidth? Are there no standards?

In the “So Bad, They’re Good” category, Netflix added New Jack City and a couple of bad kung fu movies. New Jack is so horribly 90′s that I kept expecting Bobby Brown to show up with his tenderoni, and the kung fu movies are, well, bad kung fu movies. Within a minute of the opening credits of Ninja Vs. Mafia, a guy gets attacked on the street for no reason and calmly asks his attacker, “My friend, what are you doing?” The reply? “You want to know? I’m going to kill you, BASTARD!” Then, a fight breaks out. That’s pretty much how it goes for 80 minutes. The other movie, Crash Masters Collection: 2 Great Cavaliers, is much of the same, which is only bad if you’re not a kung fu fan.

Despite the tremendous amount of bad, there was a bit of good in this round. Eight seasons of Red Dwarf were re-added, which I’m happy about because I never got through season 1 before they deleted it last time. If you like British comedy and sci-fi, the series is a good bet.

If I had to recommend only one movie for everyone from this batch, I’d tell you to check out Cashback. It had volumes of tasteful nudity for the men, sci fi for the geeks, and a love story for the ladies. I liked it so much that I watched all the features on the DVD and gave it 4/5 stars.

Netflix Watch Instantly Additions For July 10

It looks like Netflix has added over 150 movies to the Watch Instantly service in the last couple of weeks, putting the total number of titles at a little over 5100. There were 33 deletions this round, including The Disorderly Orderly (with Jerry Lewis) and the cult classic, Beyond The Valley of the Dolls, so if you were snoozin’, you were losin’.

Even though I dug out a few movies that are worth a watch, I don’t feel great about the recommendations. Most of them are classics, only one was made in this decade, and I’m fully ashamed to admit that the only reason that Career Opportunities made the list was because it included a scene with a young Jennifer Connelly riding a mechanical horse that was practically filthy.

Netflix Watch Instantly Additions For June 26

It looks like Netflix has added around 226 movies to the Watch Instantly service in the last couple of weeks, putting the total number of titles at a little over 5,000 on-demand movies.

Netflix must’ve made some sort of deal with Troma Studios this round because there were a ton of B-rated Troma films added to the Watch Instantly service. When you look at additions like The Toxic Avenger (1, 2, & 4, but not 3), Class of Nuke ‘Em High (2 & 3), Zombie Rednecks, Sugar Cookies, Tromeo And Juliet, Vegas In Space and other non-Troma, but B-rated films like Decampitated, G.I. Executioner, Dr. Hackinstein, and Microwave Massacre, it’s hard to see how this update wasn’t railroaded by a B-movie fanatic in the Netflix back office.

In addition to the B-movies, there were a few concert videos that were recorded in each band’s prime including G.G. Allin, Iggy & The Stooges, Dwarves, and Europe. If G. G. or Dwarves doesn’t end up making you want throw up, I’m sure that Europe performing “Carrie” and the “Final Countdown” in 1986 surely will.

The 226 additions and 11 deletions are listed below. If you see anything I might’ve forgotten to recommend (such as Advanced Krumping Techniques), be sure to drop them in the comments.
