Does Playing Rock Band Give You Real Rock Skills?

If you’ve never seen Attack of the Show on G4TV, it’s a daily news show starring Kevin Pereira and Olivia Munn that features news on video games, viral videos, tech, the web, and other subjects that cater to the techies among us. If you have a geeky side, it’s a nightly show that’s certainly worth a watch.

In this video, Kevin takes to the stage to see if his expert level 98% completion behind the drum kit in Rock Band is enough practice to get him behind a real drum kit on stage with the band who recorded the track for the game.

Kevin Pereira Taking His Rock Band Skills For A Test Drive

The whole thing brings up that old band joke:

Q: “What do you call someone who habitually hangs around musicians?”

A: A drummer.

Attack of the Show airs weeknights at 7PM EST on G4TV.

Hehe… while there are incredibly amazing drummers out there, all it takes for most of the basic rock songs is enough practice to learn how to move your hands and feet differently (without really getting into four-way indepedence and what-not - ie. Thomas Lang and Mike Portnoy) and be able to keep a rhythm. Once a drummer gets to that point, it seems all they focus on is speed.

I’d like to see someone who can get a 98% expert on guitar grab a real guitar and fail miserably. There is nothing guitar-like about those dinky little controllers.

I really like Attack of the Show, though it can be annoying sometimes. This challenge was pretty awesome. For some reason, I totally expected him to not know what he was doing at all. But, then again, whenever I get on the drum set for Rock Band, it’s all flailing arms and legs for me.
Though I do rock it out on the mic.
Maybe I should get a little practice behind the drum kit though…

That was amazing. A total surprise. I did not expect him to know how to actually play that on a real drum set. It sounded good. I was also amazed to find out that I really liked that band. I’ll have to get me some of that on my ipod. See Jon??? I do like metal along side my country.

It is my understanding that Kevin Pereira has been playing drums for several years. The whole practice on Rock Band and see how it translates was a gag. Hopefully I’m not being Captain Obvious here and haven’t missed something.

That being said, he performed much better than I knew he could. It sounded really good.

Side note - I played guitar briefly in middle school. I discovered girls and booze and lost interest. Now, 17 years later, Rock Band and Guitar Hero resparked the interest and I have been playing almost every day for the past 4 months.

  5. Jon Says:

@Noia: I find that playing the guitar hurts my GH abilities in some respects because I play notes that i hear rather than I’m being told to play by the game.

@Erin: I completely agree on AOTS. When it’s on, it’s on, but when it’s off, meh.

@JAK: I never said you didn’t like metal. I say you like metal all the time to #1GF!. You and I just like different kinds of metal.

@Neil: I’ve been had? How can this be? DAMN YOU INTERNETS.
