Ludacris, Blizzard Man, And The Hype Machine
This SNL skit is a couple of years old, but I just saw it for the first time a few days ago. I didn’t think that it was hysterical when I watched it, but since then, I’ve been randomly bursting out with “Blizzard Man… 1995″ or “We. Rap. All the time. Oh, we are so good at rapping!”. Once you’re done watching, I have a question for you…
(via Sneakmove)
I don’t think that Blizzard Man was intended to be a social commentary, but it made me think about the hype machines that are constantly grabbing for attention. Despite a growing immunity to marketing, at one time or another, we’ve all been duped into backing an inferior product because of an excellent marketing machine. Of the characters in the video,
Who do you most identify with?
- Blizzard Man, who is blissfully unaware at just how bad his product really is,
- Ludacris, who thinks the Blizzard Man is really good and turns everyone around,
- the soundman, who never comes around, but high fives because no one is listening to him anyway, or
- the record reps who eventually get sucked into the Blizzard Man hype machine despite their initial reactions?
Personally, I feel like all of them at one time or another, but most of the time, I feel like the Blizzard Man (and I fear that #1GF! may be like my own personal version of Luda). I. Blog. All the time. Oh, I am so good at blogging.

Soundman. Most of the time in my life I definitely am the soundman.
Crimony.

I agree, I probably feel like all of them at one time or another, but lately I feel like the soundman. Like when you hear a politician speak his/her partisan bullshit, only stating the facts that support their view while leaving out the facts that don’t…or, if I hear another millionaire money “expert” explain to “Johnny the janitor” making 26 grand a year that he’ll be able to make ends meet if he doesn’t waste $1.75 a day on Dunkin Donuts coffee… or how the judicial system doesn’t care about common sense or getting it right as long as it appears “fair” or……..nevermind, just give me a high five.

I am the soundman. I just give up and give in because in the end, who gives a flying fuck? Just pay me.
J/K! Okay, I’m still the soundman, and I give in because I’m a huge wuss.

Sorry Jon … can’t truly identify with any of them … I am too stubborn to be swayed. I’m not proud of that, but it is what it is.

I know when it comes to technology I’m a record rep. I hate new gadgets but eventually I’m conviced how cool and “necessary” they really are! My iPod travels everywhere with me.
