Small Town Police Log: The Return of the Car Alarm Bird
I mentioned a couple of years ago that there was a crazy bird in the area that imitated the sound of a car alarm. Well, it seems that the bird is back because #1GF! found this gem in our small town police log:
Sunday: 12:23 a.m. caller reports a car alarm sounding and this is an ongoing problem. Officers detailed report only sounds are chirping birds. Female called again and states this is an electronic alarm that sounds like birds and requests that the officers check again. Officer advised and reports this is a bird in a tree.
Have you ever heard birds imitate car alarms in your area?

Yep, there’s a mockingbird in my neighborhood that does the whole alarm series.

Never an alarm sound.
There used to be a woodpecker that lived in a tree in my front yard, and I could go outside and yell “Come out woodpecker!” and he’d poke his head out. True story. I guess I’m the bird whisperer. Never has there been a happier 7 year old.

Most definitely…studies have found that birds mimic the sounds of their surrounding environment and as more man-made sounds come into play, that is what they pick up.
Side note: We once lived in a neighbourhood overrun with cats. Naturally, the starlings began ‘meowing’ - quite weird as you would think it’s the last thing a bird would want to attract.

Car alarms used to be a great problem in the neighborhood. I once did hear a bird who had obviously stolen a few choruses.
I think the New York State legislation was repealed that gave people an automatic insurance discount if they used a car alarm. The alarms had been shown not to reduce theft.

My friend’s bird used to imitate his alarm clock. Very funny! EEEp EEEp EEEp pause EEEp EEEp EEEp. He’d get on a kick and do the alarm clock for a good hour. Drove my friend crazy! Which made it even funnier.

Every morning at Starbucks at 3040 & 2499 in Flower Mound, Texas, at daybreak, a mockingbird will repeatedly go through a series of car alarms. Once I counted six variations, and two sounded completely digital (if that’s the right term).

I have one of those annoying birds that is constantly making car alarm sounds from 11 at night to 3 in the afternoon. It circles my house starting from the neighbors tree in front, to my chimney, to the telephone pole in the back ,to the side neighbors chimney and back again. I have been searching sites to find a way to get rid of him. I haven’t slept well for days. Any suggestions on how to exterminate?
