Life of Riley Week 21

The Life of Riley is a weekly post that details my activities since I ended a thirteen year career as a corporate drone. These posts are usually long, personal, and geared more for my own memory than the reader’s entertainment.

Sunday (Day 140): Home Inspection

Had the home inspection which seemed to go pretty well despite a leaky roof and an old oil tank.

Monday (Day 141): Wrote, Mostly

Spent the entire day trying to piece together three articles, and barely ended up finishing one of them. Made a lot of calls to keep the house closing on track. Fixed an issue where I completely forgot to close an unordered list, which caused the comments to completely screw up the format of the site.

I called Mitsubishi corporate because they didn’t feel like returning my call. They said that the differential pump was finally on its way and that my car would be fixed by Wednesday. I laughed and hung up.

On the plus Side, Shotgun Party sent me their CD to review. It’s sort of country swing meets 1930’s blues that I find myself unintentionally singing around the house. Look for it in one of my upcoming shotgun CD reviews.

Tuesday (Day 142): Mortgage Application

Wrote all day and applied for a mortgage at night.

Wednesday (Day 143):And More Writing

Wrote all day and watched the Sox win game 1. I’m not a sports fan, so this was unusual. The last time I went to a baseball game, I missed 7 runs being scored because I was turned around talking the whole time.

I didn’t get a call from Mitsubishi.

Thursday (Day 144): Legalese

Oh look. I wrote all day. Then we reviewed our purchase and sale agreement. #1GF! had never read one before so I had to give her a little extra time to wade through the legalese. After she was done, I went through it and we forwarded it back to our lawyer. In real estate transactions, a lawyer who knows what he’s doing will catch and remove a lot of the tricks that other lawyers slip into your agreements. They are well worth the money.

Watched the Sox win Game 2 of the World Series. Again, I’m not a sports fan, so it’s pretty unusual.

Friday (Day 145): Dinner ParTAY

Continued writing my advertising page and stopped once I was sufficiently discouraged. Started reading my daily sites and downloaded the Gimp 2.4, which is the first product update in years. For those not familiar with the gimp, it’s like free Photoshop. I’ll eventually have to get installed. I also upgraded to the latest version of Ausologics Disc Defrag.

Called Mitsubishi who swore that my car, that they have had for almost a month, would be done that day. They called me back later to inform me of their lie. I wasn’t surprised. I have still not gotten a loaner or any sort of apology.

Went to a dinner at some friends house and had a good time. They always have an amazing dinner with snacks and food and then more snacks and more food. Ended up working on their PC’s until after midnight because #1GF! and I can’t resist PC’s with issues.

Saturday (Day 146): Smelly Geek With Burning Eyes

#1GF! had to work, so I spent the entire day working on the site. I widened it, created an advertising page, and rearranged the advertising in an attempt to get some better click-through rates. It really should’ve been easy, but it took all day because of my complete lack of experience with my advertising management tool. Then, I broke my site and worked on that all night. It was only a 12 hour day.

What I learned

  • Don’t start PC maintenence after 10 PM.
  • Don’t start debugging code after 6 PM.
  • Don’t ever buy a Mitsubishi. Ever. Not ever. I’m serious. They will leave you high and dry.
  • I forgot how good cheese is on nachos.
  • I need a nail gun. “Need” is not an entirely accurate term.
  • I like Shotgun Party.

Oh man. I’m so sorry that you still don’t have your car back. At least you don’t have to drive to work everyday!

I guess everything is going well with the house closing, hope it continues to do so.

I take it the “need” for the nailgun has something to do with Mitsubishi and not the roof?

    Thanks, n0ia.

The need for a nailgun is for manly endeavors, not murderous ones, but I can understand the confusion. It’s only been 4 weeks without a car.
