I Can Name That Tune In Zero Notes

The grid below contains samples taken from over 50 songs from various styles, most of which should be relatively easy to identify for people who have had access to a radio at some point over the last 30 years. Your job, when you have a few free minutes, is to see how many that you can identify.

The catch? The samples are all drums.

Instructions

Clicking on will play the sample. Clicking on will give you the answer. If you were right, click anywhere in the box to turn it green. If you were wrong, click anywhere in the box to turn it red.

Scoring

When you’re done, marking all the colors, click “Score Me” at the bottom to display your score. Because you’re self-scoring, what you call a correct answer is up to you. It can be as strict as whether you know both the title and the artist, or simply whether you can hum a couple of notes. Have fun with it.

Score Me

It should be noted that while I am really, really handy with Perl, I wrote this all in . Because I’m really, really rusty in , you may have noticed a complete lack of posts over the last two weeks while I put this bitch together. It was partly because of the , but mostly because WordPress doesn’t really like to play with without some arm wrestling. I would like to have written it in Flash, but I was stopped by both the $400 entry fee and the fact that I’d probably still be working on it. As always, the only reason that I do this crap is so #1GF! and you might have some fun.

Well, I’ve now learned that my heart lies in punk, a bit of funk, heavy metal, hard rock, and many times I could name the band/artist, but couldn’t come up with the song title.

I laughed heartily at the Cinderella entry! WHOO HOO!

  2. Michelle Says:

And by the way…very impressive work, we, your adoring public, appreciate it greatly.

  3. tankboy Says:

    Excellent use of Spinal Tap!

  4. K. Says:

This was so much fun! Please do another!

I grew up watching Name That Tune so I am well-trained for this.

I want to marry you for adding in Ugly Truth by Soundgarden. Love, love that song, especially the beginning.

  5. Michelle Says:

I think there should be a name that tune by COWBELL!

    I. Ron Maiden made me laugh out bloody loud!
    Thanks man

  7. Former Cubemate Says:

Did you find some alternate version of “In the Air Tonight”? Because I totally didn’t recognize it…

  8. Jon Says:

Michelle - As always, Muchas Garcias. #1GF!’s agrees with you on the cowbell idea, but I just don’t know… Anyway, Long live Cinderella and D[a]n Dokken (even though he sucks).

K - I will admit that the Soundgarden was a personalized addition with you in mind for being one of my four readers and the only internet personality ever to propose to me on the interweb.

Tankboy - Thanks. Is there really a bad use of Spinal Tap, though?

D - I. Ron was pretty much for your amusement.

FCM - #1GF! made the same complaint, but I thought I could get away with it. I guess not. I went back and replaced the track with the studio version. I added one track specifically for you, as well, and not to wish you ill will or anything, but I hope it eats your brain.

  9. V. Says:

That was rough for me. I got about 11, but the U2 one made my wee fangirl heart grow in size.

  10. Khandi Says:

    I only got 5…

  11. Kung Fu CHUD Says:

LOL… First I thought it wasn’t working and I felt bad since I knew you put a lot of work into it.

Then I discovered my speakers weren’t on. I’m an idiot!

    Great work! Thanks!

  12. Michelle Says:

I think I got between 23-25 right. I was bothered that I didn’t know the Led Zep or the Soundgarden tunes, but scarily knew Walkin’ on Sunshine and We Got The Beat…*shudder*.

  13. Former Cubemate Says:

Much better on the Phil Collins (and yes, sadly, I got Katrina and the Waves AND the Go-Go’s). But, I couldn’t find the new one meant specifically to torture me (unless of course it WAS the aforementioned, in which case, Michelle was caught in the cross-fire :-) Give me a row/column?

  14. Jon Says:

FCM: Dead Center, three from the bottom.
