my old roommate had her identity stolen. the theory is that someone stole a bill from our outgoing mail, reproduced checks at home (you can print them on your computer, or could at the time), and wrote enough checks to overdraw her bank account. before knowing any of this, she went to the bank, deposited her check, and it wasn't until she looked at her NEGATIVE BALANCE that she realized something was up. the check she deposited went towards the negative balance and essentially that money was gone. she had no money to access b/c this happened to her BANK ACCOUNT. she had to have her parents wire her money until it was straightened out. moral: put your outgoing mail in an official mailbox.

I had this done on two occassion. One was with a phone card and over a w/e, it was used to call, literally, all over the world. The second time was someone got hold of my number and charged hundreds of dollars inclothes from Lane Bryant catalogue and had them sent to an address in NY. Both times the company was on the ball and caught the large activity so I was not responsible. It is really bad news to have this happen.

Whoa. I've never been a victim of credit card fraud, but it is definitely a scary thing. When I made a large purchase at the baby store for all the baby furniture the cashier had to call the credit card company to confirm I was who I am. It made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing that they actually do have safeguards in place for instances like that.
